Our Take On The SUV sales Numbers

SUV sales in the USA in March 2018 shot up by 20.5% year-on-year, with competition at the top of the table fuelling some large increases in sales volume.

RAV4 sales growth outstripped growth of sales for the Nissan Rogue, though the Rogue has taken a clear lead at the top of the SUV table through 2018’s first quarter. The Nissan’s sales momentum shows few signs of slowing, as last month was the nameplate’s best on record.

A new RAV4 was revealed by Toyota at the New York Auto Show, due for model year 2019, which the Japanese brand will be hoping will help it retake the SUV crown as it did in 2017.

GM’s crossover offering also had a big impact on the bottom line last month, with its Chevrolet-branded crossover sales up 39% and Buick crossovers posting 50% growth.

The Jeep brand continues its strong form, with the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and Compass all netting a spot in the top 15 SUV sales in the USA, with all showing significant growth in their sales compared with last year.

Doubling its performance compared with last March, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class was the highest selling premium SUV in the USA.
